Our Club
With the “first version” of our club established in the mid 90s, and we have been competing in the Surrey leagues ever since. The club was founded as the Heathwater Hogs in 1995 and it is early years had a few teams in the Surrey league. We can trace the origins to an adult education class run by an experienced South Korean coach. Even then, we can see traces of the international backbone of our club.
In the Surrey leagues almost from day 1, teams took the name of the club sponsor at the time; Teddington Carpet Burners, Teddington Shag Piles…. Our sponsor was our still good friends, Teddington Carpets.
The club officially changed name again in 2007, to become the Spelthorne Volleyball Club. Originally based in Sunbury, we have changed homes around Spelthorne and Runnymede a few times and, with a bigger club we play home games in Egham and Ashford.
The thought of our Junior section kicked off in April 2021, with the first indoor session in May 2021. Starting with a boys team, we have today over 100 juniors playing every week and, some of our original juniors now playing with adult teams.
From a start with one team at the club, we are today the largest club in the Surrey leagues with 4 teams in the ladies league and 8 men’s teams in the leagues. And, with 4 teams in the junior leagues, Spelthorne VC is also the club with the largest representation in the county youth leagues.
At the last count, with over 50 nationality, we think we are uniquely representative of the multicultural volleyball community at our club. Nowadays with over 220 adult and junior members, we are a vibrant club with a passion for making volleyball accessible to all, whatever background or experience.
Our Successes
We also have a competitive streak and have enjoyed success over the years. Since changing our name to Spelthorne Volleyball Club, we have won leagues in Surrey, South East and National Volleyball leagues:
